Pericardial cyst: a benign anomaly.

چکیده
DESCRIPTION A 54-year-old asymptomatic man was detected to have a prominent left heart border on a routine chest x-ray done during his annual health check (figure 1, arrows). Echocardiogram revealed a cystic lesion occupying the space antero-lateral to the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT; figure 2). The cystic cavity did not produce any compression of the RVOT. CT of the chest showed a 6×4 cm homogeneous smooth-walled cyst with no evidence of contrast enhancement or calcification (figures 3 and 4) confirming a pericardial cyst. Repeat echocardiogram done 6 months later did not show any progression of size. Pericardial cysts are rare congenital anomaly located in the mediastinum. They are usually asymptomatic; but rarely produce symptoms based on their location and size. Commonly they are located in the right cardiophrenic angle, followed by the left, antero-superior and posterior mediastinum. They are usually unilocular, wellmarginated, spherical-shaped cysts lined with a single layer of mesothelial cells histologically. Most of the cysts are asymptomatic but occasional complications include obstruction of the RVOT, obstruction of the main bronchi and atelectesis, cardiac tamponade and sudden death. Imaging modalities include echocardiography, CT and MRI. Usually close follow-up is sufficient in asymptomatic patients. Percutaneous drainage and surgical resection are the usual treatment modalities for symptomatic individuals.

Bronchogenic cyst associated with pericardial defect: Case report and review of the literature
Partial defect of the pericardium combined with bronchogenic cyst is a very rare congenital anomaly. We describe the case of a 32-year-old man with a partial defect of the left pericardium and a bronchogenic cyst arising from the border of the pericardial defect. The cyst was successfully resected with the harmonic scalpel by three-port videothoracoscopic approach.
متن کاملAn unusual presentation of pericardial cyst: recurrent syncope in a young patient.
Although pericardial cysts are generally benign structures and detected incidentally, they may be associated with life-threatening complications. We present the case of a 24 year-old man with a giant hemorrhagic pericardial cyst diagnosed after evaluation for recurrent syncope which caused compression of the right ventricle. Spontaneous hemorrhage into a pericardial cyst is an extremely rare ev...
متن کاملPericardial cyst with right ventricular compression
Pericardial cysts are infrequent and benign mediastinal lesions. While most pericardial cysts are asymptomatic, some patients may present with compression symptoms. We present the case of a 22-year-old man who presented with a right pericardial cyst that caused compression of the right ventricle.
متن کاملPericardial cyst: a rare cause of pericardial effusion.
Pericardial cysts occur rarely, with an incidence rate of 1 per 100,000. They are usually detected by chance and clinically silent in most cases. Pericardial cysts are the most common benign tumours of the pericardium and presents by the third or fourth decade of life, and equally common in males and females. In principle, they only require follow-up, however, an enlarging or symptomatic cyst r...
متن کاملCongenital Partial Left Pericardial Defect with a Bronchogenic Cyst.
Congenital deficiency of the pericardium is a rare anomaly which is not mentioned in standard surgical textbooks. Rarer still is the association of this defect with a bronchogenic cyst. I have found only three references to it in the literature; one by Rusby and Sellors (1945), the second by Hamilton (1961), and the third one was a sequestrated lung cyst in a patient reported by Warner, Britt, ...
